Product Packaging
Transcends StoreJet 25MC comes in a cut-out window box pack, protected by a transparent plastic shell which enables you to have a look at the drive from the box.
On unboxing the pack, it includes inside, the 2.5″ portable HDD, a reversible USB Type-C cable, a start guide leaflet, and a warranty card. It looks good anyway, or don’t you think so?
Design
[tribulant_slideshow gallery_id=20]
The StoreJet 25MC comes in an iron-gray color. It is designed in a similar way as other Transcend’s StoreJet line-up drives: with a three-stage shock protection casing that house the 2.5″ drive. The drive is rounded with a green strip across the top and a One Touch Auto-Backup button at the top right corner.
One thing for sure about Transcend’s use of three-layer soft-rubber sleeve on the drive – is that it has passed for shock and drop test. So, you can tick for durability and perhaps, ruggedness.
The One Touch Auto-Back is a remarkable feature that makes data backup all possible in one touch. This undoubtedly saves you the hassle of manual backup. And in an effort by Transcend to produce a more portable drive, the StoreJet 25MC only weighs about 216g, which is a tad lighter than its cousin, the Transcend StoreJet 25H3.
But then again comes a backdrop on the design. The package comes with one Type-C USB cable which is compatible only with any device with a USB Type-C port. This is a limitation faced. So, if your PC doesn’t have a Type-C USB port, you’ll need to get a USB Type-C to USB 2.0 cable to connect with.
Performance
Transcend claims StoreJet 25MC offers an ultra-fast file transfer rate. Results from our performance tests indicate an above average performance. This should be able to get any user through the day to day tasks with the drive.
When tested for performance using CrystalDiskMark, StoreJet 25MC recorded a transfer speed of 145 MB/s read and 144 MB/s write. This is not far beyond the range of speed recorded on other StoreJet hard drive models we’ve tested.
However, that’s just a decent read and write speed for StoreJet 25MC when compared to some other hard drives like, Buffalo MiniStation Extreme NFC which offers better performance. StoreJet 25MC transfer speed seems much standard for an external hard drive, yet there’s still room for Transcend to improve in this aspect.
Transcend offers a 3-year limited warranty for this drive, which puts you on a safe side in case something happens within that period.
Usability
This drive is pretty much easy to use. With the starter-guide leaflet, it comes with, you can use your drive out of the box via the plug and play – no need to be tech-savvy.
The drive comes with the Transcend Elite data management software that works in tandem with the One Touch auto-backup to enhance usability. This software allows you to create backups, encrypt data, synchronize bookmarks and restore your backups if accidentally deleted. And drive offers 256-bit AES and folder encryption, which is one of the best encryption forms in the world right now. So, you are sure of your privacy protected from attackers.
Its software specification includes the RecoveRX software you can use to successfully recover deleted data from the drive. Additionally, there is the StoreJet Toolbox where you can perform a quick format or low-level format for a selected StoreJet drive.
When using the drive, the blue ring around the One Touch auto-Backup button blinks a blue LED. It becomes static when idle, and turns off when it’s not in use – indicating sleep mode.
It’s absolutely cool for StoreJet 25MC to have such amazing features. This drive is compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Mac OS X 10.7, or Linux Kernel 2.6.31 OS.
Final Verdict
The shock-proof design makes it durable to protect your data from rough handling and sudden accident, which passed for durability. And the 216g weight makes it lighter and more portable when you are on-the-go. Also, the 256-bit AES encryption is a plus on the drive as it guarantees optimal privacy. Moreover, the One Touch auto-Backup on the drive adds much convenience for use, while the 3-year limited warranty is a nice insurance.
However, the portable hard drive isn’t just the fastest drive in the market although it can get you through your normal everyday data storage tasks.
