The common form of hard drive docking station takes naked hard drives, and is intended to be used with multiple drives. It doesn't really protect the drive, but it's really convenient.
An enclosure is a box designed to hold a (formerly naked) hard drive to turn it into an external hard drive. It does protect the drive.
Both types of devices are very similar in performance. So there’s little to choose between them. We’re not particularly fond of docking stations since space is a premium around here (referring to “here” as planet Earth).
Assuming we’re working with an external USB enclosure/docking station that has the capability for accommodating both 2.5″ & 3.5″ drives, the power switch is either on the front or the top of the device. Why is this important when comparing hard drive enclosures vs docking stations? It can be a deal breaker for us if the power switch is on the rear (back) of the case (as so often you find with docking stations). It is an important consideration for us, especially if you’re a user with accessibility in mind.
My primary advice to PC users seeking a USB external HDD/SSD device is DO NOT purchase a commercial “one-piece” unit.
